Sphere Entertainment is preparing to expand its distinctive venue concept beyond Las Vegas with plans for a smaller-scale Sphere near Washington, DC. The new location is set to be developed at National Harbor, a popular entertainment and leisure district in Maryland.
According to US media reports, the venue will have a capacity of around 6,000 seats, making it significantly smaller than the original Sphere in Las Vegas. The project marks the first time Sphere Entertainment is deliberately adapting the concept into a more compact format.
The development is being planned in collaboration with the State of Maryland, Prince George's County and local developer Peterson Companies. While timelines and final designs are still subject to approval, the project is intended to strengthen National Harbor's position as a major destination for live entertainment and large-scale events in the Washington DC region.
Like its Las Vegas counterpart, the venue is expected to feature advanced immersive technologies, including large-format LED surfaces and a high-end audio system designed to envelop audiences. However, the reduced scale suggests a more versatile venue that could host a wider variety of event productions throughout the year.
If approved, this would become the second Sphere venue in the United States and the first example of a smaller, more adaptable version of the concept. Sphere Entertainment has indicated that this model could serve as a blueprint for future developments in other major cities.
