"Tomorrowland fire broke out shortly after fire bowl test"

The fire that completely destroyed the Tomorrowland main stage started after a fire broke out in a fire pit during a test, according to Belgian broadcaster VRT NWS. The judicial investigation is still ongoing.

Shortly before the fire broke out on the Tomorrowland main stage, a test was conducted with at least four fire bowls. These are two-meter-wide bowls filled with highly flammable materials. They create spectacular flames during the performances. During testing of these bowls, before the festival began, an initial fire broke out in one of the fire bowls. Some time later, the stage caught fire, according to VRT NWS, citing "well-placed sources."

Those sources say the cause of that first fire is clear. That moment was captured by security cameras filming the main stage. Tomorrowland is not commenting on the cause of that first fire. "Everything is filmed at the festival," Debby Wilmsen, spokeswoman for Tomorrowland, told De Standaard. "The grounds are full of cameras. That footage has been handed over to the public prosecutor's office, which is investigating the fire."

According to VRT NWS, it's possible to compile a timeline of the fire. First, there was a fire at the fire pit. Then, the fire broke out on the main stage. Fireworks were scattered nearby, and the stage set consisted largely of flammable materials like Styrofoam and wood. However, VRT is cautious about the cause of the large fire. "The fact that a fire started at one fire pit doesn't mean that fire pit was the only factor that led to the entire fire," the station writes. "That's precisely what's being investigated."

"Fireworks placed under stage too early"

VRT NWS was also able to review the permit the company behind Tomorrowland received from the Boom municipal council in May 2025 to set off fireworks. The company alleged that the fireworks were placed under the stage too early, that people were present who weren't supposed to be there, and that the matter wasn't properly communicated with the Federal Public Service Economy. All findings were documented in a report and forwarded to the Antwerp public prosecutor's office.

The municipal permit states, among other things, that "fireworks used during the festival may not be stored on the festival grounds." Tomorrowland is not currently communicating about the fire. "The judicial investigation is still ongoing," says Debby Wilmsen, "and we have every confidence in it. We have no additional information and no indication of when the investigation will be concluded."

Boom Mayor Jeroen Baert (N-VA) is unhappy with the reports. "The investigation is still ongoing, and the public prosecutor's office recently informed me that they cannot yet provide any information. So I can't judge whether the reports are accurate, because I simply don't know. The administrative authority, which bears the responsibility, is apparently the last to receive any news. While I've been asking for information for months to know what measures we need to take for the next event, it's difficult for me to judge whether the regulations for the last event were sufficient. I'm not a fire specialist. For that, we first need to know the cause. Was it a test at the fire pit? Or was it a short circuit?"
