Event Confederation is baffled and counted on more, much more
More ambition, more clarity, but now also more support. We have to go from a 'no, because' to a 'yes, but' society.
Bruno Schaubroeck: 'Our proposal made it possible to very carefully give society a little perspective on freedom and yet also give the care system the guarantee that events will not put extra pressure on their system. That was possible within our proposal. Our plan only started when at least 75% of the ICU beds were free for non-COVID patients. In the following phases, this even had to rise to 90% before our sector could start up. Apparently that was not enough to get an answer.
Since September, we have been asked to wait for vaccination, which is now running at a stable and predictably good pace. We have waited patiently for it, even helping build vaccination centers. The issue is the number of ICU beds, our model was made on the parameters of vaccination and number of beds available at the ICU, in order to give perspective to our broad sector.
We have to go from a 'no, because' to a 'yes, but' society. We are going to have to learn to live with this virus. There is clarity for May and June, but more clarity up to and including the autumn could have been done after 14 months. Ditto about the quick tests. After so many months, something can be said about it. There are possibilities as far as we are concerned.
Bruno Schaubroeck: 'Preparation time is so typical of the sector. The lack of clarity cannot be justified. This is drastic for the entire sector. How can we start planning now? You don't put an event together on the corner of a table in fifteen minutes.
Public health is and remains our priority for EC, but mental public health is also important. The EC sees support for current measures fading further and further in society. EC is convinced that as a sector it can be a partner for the government in order to channel events such as La Boum, L'Abime, etc. in a safe way. Many people need some space. That is why we put our plan, a conditional plan, on the table, a plan where up to 9 out of 10 ICU beds had to be empty to start up, which turned out not to be enough.
Support
For our 3,200 companies, the grueling, unclear months will continue. Further expansion of the support is necessary. It is not understandable why the Flemish Protection Mechanism is just now dropping from 15% to 10%. Our counter in terms of closure for the events sector is now at 14 and counting. Society demands our solidarity, then society must also show solidarity with us. Extend what is needed, expand to our sector if possible. We ask nothing more than to just work.

Bruno Schaubroeck: ‘Ons voorstel liet toe om én de maatschappij heel voorzichtig een beetje perspectief op vrijheid te geven én toch ook het zorgsysteem de garantie te geven dat er door events geen extra druk komt op hun systeem. Dat kon binnen ons voorstel. Ons plan startte pas op als minimum 75% van de ICU-bedden vrij waren voor niet-COVID patiënten. In de volgende fases moest dat zelfs stijgen naar 90% voordat onze sector mocht opstarten. Blijkbaar was dat nog niet voldoende om een antwoord te krijgen.
Sinds september wordt ons gevraagd te wachten op vaccinatie, die loopt nu aan een stabiel en voorspelbaar goed tempo. We hebben er geduldig op gewacht, zelfs mee helpen vaccinatiecentra bouwen. Het issue is het aantal ICU-bedden, ons model was gemaakt op de parameters vaccinatie en aantal bedden beschikbaar bij de ICU, om op die manier perspectief te geven aan onze brede sector.
We moeten van een ‘nee, want’ naar een ‘ja, maar’-maatschappij. We gaan moeten leren leven met dit virus. Er is duidelijkheid voor mei en juni, maar meer duidelijkheid tot en met het najaar had na 14 maanden wel gemogen. Idem over de sneltesten. Na zoveel maanden mag daar toch ook wat over gezegd worden. Daar zitten mogelijkheden wat ons betreft.
Bruno Schaubroeck: ‘Zo eigen aan de sector is voorbereidingstijd. Het uitblijven van duidelijkheid is niet goed te praten. Dit is dra-ma-tisch voor de hele sector. Hoe kunnen wij nu beginnen plannen? Een event steek je niet in elkaar op de hoek van een tafel in een kwartiertje tijd.
Voor EC is én blijft de volksgezondheid ook onze prioriteit maar ook de mentale volksgezondheid is belangrijk. EC ziet de steun voor de actuele maatregelen steeds verder afkalven in de maatschappij. EC is ervan overtuigd dat ze als sector een partner kan zijn voor de overheid om op die manier gebeurtenissen als La Boum, L’Abime etc op een veilige manier te kanaliseren. Heel veel mensen hebben nood aan wat ruimte. Vandaar dat we ons plan, een voorwaardelijk plan, op tafel hebben gelegd, een plan waarbij tot 9 van de 10 ICU-bedden leeg moesten zijn om op te starten, wat niet voldoende bleek.
Steun
Voor onze 3.200 bedrijven blijven de slopende onduidelijke maanden maar duren. Verdere uitbreiding van de steun is noodzakelijk. Waarom het Vlaams Beschermingsmechanisme net nu terug daalt van 15% naar 10% is niet te begrijpen. Onze teller qua sluiting voor de eventsector staat ondertussen op 14 and counting. De maatschappij vraag onze solidariteit, dan moet de maatschappij ook solidair zijn met ons. Verlengen wat nodig is, uitbreiden naar onze sector wat kan. We vragen niets liever dan gewoon te werken.
