How do you organize exams with hundreds of students in one room if you have to keep a distance of 1.5 meters? For a long time it was the exam question that no one could answer. But look: with a little creativity we transformed Flanders Expo in Ghent into the largest exam room in our country. 107,000 exams In recent weeks it was perhaps the most discussed theme in education: what about the exams? Auditoriums are large, but not that big either. How do you ensure that every student can still take their exams in June? With eight event halls and an empty event calendar, Flanders Expo turned out to be the lifesaver. “Until the end of June, we are organizing around 107,000 exams here,” says Katrien Verhoeven. “We do that in different shifts and in five different halls. And also in Antwerp Expo and Namur Expo we will soon receive thousands of students - and even candidate police officers - for their final exams. ” 8 kilometers of fences Few students consider the exam period to be an event, but production-wise it is still very close. “We have installed a total of about eight kilometers of nadar fences. In this way, we literally lead the daily influx of students into good jobs. The signage and communication plan has also been adjusted and will ensure that every student ends up at the correct disinfected table. ” To ensure that all that traffic runs smoothly, Flanders Expo converted Hall 1 - one of the largest halls in our country - into a so-called crowd control room. Here all students gather at a safe distance from each other and employees of the college and university send everyone to the correct hall.

Hoe organiseer je examens met honderden studenten in één lokaal als je verplicht anderhalve meter afstand moet bewaren? Het was lang dé examenvraag die niemand kon beantwoorden. Maar kijk: met een beetje creativiteit toverden we het Gentse Flanders Expo om in het grootste examenlokaal van ons land.
107.000 examens
De afgelopen weken was het misschien wel het meest besproken thema in het onderwijs: wat met de examens? Aula’s zijn groot, maar nu ook weer niet zó groot. Hoe zorg je dan dat elke student toch nog in juni zijn examens kan afleggen?
Met acht eventhallen en een lege eventkalender bleek Flanders Expo de redder in nood. “Tot eind juni organiseren we hier zo’n 107.000 examens”, zegt Katrien Verhoeven. “We doen dat in verschillende shifts en in vijf verschillende hallen. En ook in Antwerp Expo en Namur Expo ontvangen we straks duizenden studenten – en zelfs kandidaat-politieagenten – voor hun eindexamens.”
8 kilometer hekkens
Er zijn weinig studenten die de examenperiode als een event beschouwen, maar productioneel komt het toch sterk in de buurt. “We hebben in totaal zo’n acht kilometer nadarhekkens geplaatst. Daarmee leiden we de dagelijkse toestroom van studenten letterlijk in goeie banen. Ook het signalisatie- en communicatieplan is aangepast en zorgt dat elke student straks aan de juiste ontsmette tafel belandt.”
Om al dat verkeer vlot te laten verlopen, bouwde Flanders Expo Hal 1 – één van de grootste hallen van ons land – om tot een zogenaamde crowd control room. Hier verzamelen alle studenten op veilige afstand van elkaar en sturen medewerkers van de hogeschool en de universiteit iedereen naar de juiste hal.
