The Witham

The Witham is a community arts centre and event venue in the heart of Barnard Castle, offering a collection of distinctive spaces for private, community and business events. Its historic building combines a Victorian Music Hall with smaller rooms, a gallery, café bar and walled garden, giving event planners several settings to consider under one roof.

The Music Hall can be arranged for performances, celebrations, markets and social occasions. Seating can be moved to make room for different layouts, with space for dining tables and a dance floor. The venue can discuss options for music, entertainment and refreshments, including a cash bar and, where arrangements allow, food from its café or an outside caterer.

For smaller gatherings, the light-filled Witham Room accommodates up to around 60 people and can suit meetings, family celebrations, talks and workshops. The County Room offers a more compact, adaptable setting for boardroom meetings, classes, creative sessions or as a breakout room. It has projection facilities, and its sink makes it practical for art activities. The gallery can be hired for exhibitions or, subject to its programme, private entertaining. The café bar and garden may also be booked, with the garden available on its own or alongside selected indoor spaces.

The Witham welcomes enquiries about celebrations, business meetings, workshops, memorial gatherings and other occasions. Its team can discuss room layouts and help shape a bespoke arrangement around the event. As a working arts centre, the venue also presents theatre, music, film, comedy and exhibitions, so organisers can enquire about hiring a culturally active setting with a strong local character.
