Rotterdam Ahoy
New phase Hart van Zuid: definitive arrival of Pathé cinema and parking garage

November 19, 2020

In addition to Rotterdam Ahoy, a cinema, catering industry and a parking garage will definitely be built. This week the contracts were signed between the development consortium Ballast Nedam Development and Heijmans Vastgoed, Municipality of Rotterdam, Rotterdam Ahoy, Pathé, Ballast Nedam Parking and project developer Epicurus. In February 2020, a development agreement was already signed for the realization of a hotel. This gives leisure a full place within the Hart van Zuid area development.

Leisureplot

The leisure plot is part of the Hart van Zuid area development, which also includes the Rotterdam Swimming Center, the newly opened Theater Zuidplein and the yet to be opened Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Center and music hall RTM Stage. The area around Zuidplein will be the vibrant city center for South Rotterdam. More liveliness and a better and longer visit to the area are objectives within the development. The arrival of leisure facilities such as the Pathé cinema and the new catering industry gives an extra reason to visit Hart van Zuid. A visit to, for example, the Zuidplein Shopping Center or a walk in the Zuiderpark will soon be easy to combine with a movie and a dinner. Due to its location near the metro and bus station and not far from the A15, the facilities are easily accessible by public transport and car. There will be more than 600 parking spaces in the garage to be built. Construction of Pathé is expected to start in mid-2023.

A hotel is also planned within the leisure plot. In February of this year, a development agreement was signed for this together with Foruminvest. The final details are currently being discussed and it is expected that more will be known about the realization of the hotel soon.

Onno Dwars, on behalf of the development consortium Ballast Nedam Development and Heijmans Vastgoed: The quality impulse that this large-scale area development gives to Rotterdam exceeds all expectations. The interplay of old and new and the meaning that can be given a place for society has nowhere been more comprehensive and visible than here in Hart van Zuid. It is a wonderful milestone in the collaboration between public and private parties.

Bas Kurvers, Alderman for Building and Living: Rotterdam continues to devote heart and soul to the growth of Hart van Zuid into a fully-fledged central area. Investing is necessary now to be able to continue stronger in the longer term. I am pleased that our partners in this area development also see this opportunity. The area is already an attractive place to stay in your spare time, for example because of the new Theater Zuidplein. The arrival of Pathé, new catering establishments and the parking garage is a great addition for residents and visitors of Zuidplein.

Jolanda Jansen, CEO Rotterdam Ahoy adds: This is great news. There was a complex task with various stakeholders. The corona pandemic certainly did not make the situation any easier. At a time when it is far from self-evident to take such risks, we believe in and invest in the long-term perspective for this area. We are therefore more than pleased that the cooperation between the various parties has blossomed and we are now really on the eve of a great boost for Rotterdam-South.

Pathé cinema

Jacques Hoendervangers, General Manager Pathé: We are delighted that the construction of our new cinema at Ahoy has become more concrete again. It is precisely during this period that we find it important to look to the future with confidence. Rotterdam is an important city for us. Two of our existing cinemas are already located here, including our most visited cinema Pathé De Kuip. The new cinema at Ahoy will be beautifully central and accessible in an area that, thanks to the expanded Ahoy and the creation of catering establishments, will become an attractive entertainment center in Rotterdam. We look forward to letting even more Rotterdammers and people from the area enjoy the best films at this new location, together with their friends and family.

The plans for the cinema and the catering industry

Bernard van der Schans, director Epicurus: With the realization of the cinema and catering industry, the Zuiderparkplein will become an attractive urban area. Epicurus, together with De Architecten Cie, has drawn up a plan for a powerful and striking building, in which the latest formulas for cinema and catering will find a place. Rotterdam Ahoy and the Pathé cinema will embrace the square on three sides. The cinema and the catering industry with spacious terraces will bring cosiness and liveliness seven days a week.

Parking garage

Thom Hienekamp, Managing Director Ballast Nedam Parking: As Ballast Nedam Parking we are proud to be able to make our contribution to the development of the leisure site in Hart van Zuid. The new parking garage, designed by ourselves in collaboration with wUrck architecture urban development landscape, consists of 626 parking spaces and will provide the required parking capacity. A wonderful reference, both through the collaboration in the construction team with all stakeholders and through the realization of the parking garage in the inner city area.
