In April, European real estate developer Foruminvest will start building a new hotel with 250 rooms next to Rotterdam Ahoy. The business and leisure hotel is on a long-term lease to the German HR Group, which will operate an ibis Styles after the summer of 2023.

Long-cherished wish

In 2020, Hart van Zuid, the Heijmans/Ballast Nedam construction consortium, the Municipality of Rotterdam and Rotterdam Ahoy signed a contract with Foruminvest for the new hotel to be built. A hotel has always been a great wish of Ahoy. It is special that it is precisely in these difficult years that the deal has been closed and that construction is now really starting. Jolanda Jansen, Managing Director of Rotterdam Ahoy, says: “We are extremely pleased that after a long start-up process, the bullet has now really gone through the church. The demand for hotel accommodation is high during (international) conferences, trade fairs, shows and concerts. We will soon be able to offer a total package. Ibis Styles also fits well with our city, a unique hotel with creative design. With the addition of the hotel, this area will soon become a real new hotspot in the city.”

Area development

The construction of the hotel is part of the Hart van Zuid area development, the area around Ahoy and Zuidplein metro station. A special place, located at the Zuiderpark, the largest city park in the Netherlands. As part of this project, the Exhibition & Evenementenhallen of Ahoy were modernized in 2018 and the new Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Center and the RTM Stage music and theater hall were opened at the end of 2020.

Aerjen Koeneman, Director Foruminvest: “We are proud that we can contribute to this area development with our hotel expertise. With HR Group, we linked a strong and expert hotel operator to the project. We are realizing the latest ibis Styles formula together with an attractive restaurant formula that fits perfectly with the combination of business and leisure overnight stays.” A franchise agreement has been concluded with Accor for the exploitation. HR Group is a multi-brand hotel operator based in Berlin. It operates approximately 80 hotels in Europe.
