Unicorn Theatre

The Unicorn Theatre is an intimate performance and event venue set within Abingdon’s historic Abbey Buildings. With seating for up to 92 guests, it can be hired by community groups, schools and organisers planning a range of occasions, including drama, music, comedy, talks, conferences and ceremonies. Its distinctive medieval setting and Elizabethan-style stage offer a characterful backdrop for live performances and gatherings.

The theatre has heating, Wi-Fi, 48 spotlights and surround-sound audio. Organisers can book it for a single day or longer, with reduced rates available for some rehearsal, arrival and departure days. Technical help can be arranged for an additional fee, making the space suitable for groups that need assistance with lighting and sound. A licensed bar can be hosted in the adjoining Checker space, and bar service may be arranged.

Local amateur theatre groups and music performers use the venue, while schools can enquire about staging student drama or music productions, with rehearsal time available. The wider Abbey Buildings offer additional rooms for receptions and other gatherings, although catering is not provided by the venue and must be arranged separately.

The Abbey Buildings are currently closed for a major refurbishment, with reopening planned for October 2027. The project includes improvements to theatre facilities and accessibility. Organisers considering future bookings can contact the venue to discuss dates and requirements.
