Rotterdam Ahoy is celebrating its 50th anniversary. On January 15, 1971, the current event accommodation in South Rotterdam was officially opened by HRH Prince Claus. The origins of Ahoy go back to 1950, when the harbor exhibition 'Rotterdam Ahoy!' to mark the completion of the reconstruction of the port of Rotterdam, it was held on the spot where the Erasmus MC now stands.

Different kind of party

The plans for the anniversary celebration were different from the current reality. The corona virus that emerged last March and shut down the event industry is the cause of this. Jolanda Jansen, Managing Director Rotterdam Ahoy: "The plan was to go big this month with a party weekend for all our relations and to celebrate the official opening of the brand new Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Center and RTM Stage. Of course we have those plans under the "The current circumstances have been put on hold and we hope to be able to get together later in the year and celebrate this milestone live. After all, we have been around for 50 years and are made for live meetings!" The kick-off of the anniversary year will be festive in a different form.

On the webpage www.ahoy50jaar.nl, Ahoy looks back on 50 years of special events and moments. A video shows the specially designed anniversary logo, which the location will use all year round. In addition, this morning during the day opening of the InfraTech trade fair, which will take place entirely online this year, attention was paid to the anniversary and a special livestream will be organized tomorrow for close relations and Ahoy employees prior to 'De Vrienden van Amstel Livestream'. .

Special gift

In addition, preparations are in full swing for two special anniversary activities: later in the year, Ahoy will offer a special gift to the city on its forecourt, and a book is also being published in which various Rotterdammers and acquaintances share their memories and views on Ahoy parts. Jansen: "We would like to present these two special items at a time when we can really get back together and raise a glass to a great history and a promising future!"
