The Stadsfeestzaal: pearl in the Antwerp crown

Antwerp's famous Stadsfeestzaal has already had an eventful history. Today it is the place where 6.5 million people enjoy a unique shopping experience, in a beautifully restored environment that exudes luxurious grandeur. But originally the building served as a large party and exhibition hall.

Every Antwerp resident has great memories of the Stadsfeestzaal. The countless exhibitions, fairs, balls, school parties and Sinterklaas visits are etched in the collective memory of the city.

Grand opening

The construction of the Stadsfeestzaal started at the end of the 19th century. City architect Alexis Van Mechelen created the monumental building, which was festively inaugurated 8 years and 400,000 Belgian francs later. The Stadsfeestzaal opened its doors on 8 February 1908. In 1983 the building was officially recognized as a monument.

Its location in the heart of the Antwerp city center - right in the middle of the Meir - made the city festival hall a unique building. The rich architecture of this grand establishment appealed to the imagination of residents and visitors of the biscuit town from day one.

The test of time

Over the years, time took its toll. The building became outdated due to intensive use and laborious maintenance. In 2000, the city of Antwerp concluded an agreement with Multi Development to breathe new life into the city festival hall. This was part of a major revitalization of the Antwerp shopping circuit.

However, that did not go without a struggle. In December 2000, a fierce fire destroyed the entire city party hall. Only the monumental stairs, the historic facade and the steel roof construction remained. A long process of permit applications delayed the revival of the property.

A new life for an old monument

In 2004 light suddenly shone at the end of the tunnel. Multi Development acquired the project for the re-use of the Stadsfeestzaal and got to work immediately. What followed was a fine example of planning, vision, craftsmanship and intensive work.

A new era

In October 2007 the time had finally come. The renovated, glorious Shopping Stadsfeestzaal opened its doors to the public. It was the final piece of an integral shopping circuit in the city center. With quality housing facilities and a substantial extension of the parking space on top.

Until today Shopping Stadsfeestzaal is a glittering beacon in the heart of the city. A royal monument that every Antwerp citizen is rightly proud of.

De Stadsfeestzaal: parel aan de Antwerpse kroon

De beroemde Stadsfeestzaal van Antwerpen heeft al een bewogen geschiedenis achter de rug. Vandaag is het de plek waar 6,5 miljoen mensen genieten van een unieke shoppingervaring, in een prachtig gerestaureerde omgeving die luxueuze grootsheid ademt. Maar oorspronkelijk deed het gebouw dienst als een grote feest- en tentoonstellingszaal.

Elke Antwerpenaar heeft mooie herinneringen aan de Stadsfeestzaal. De talloze tentoonstellingen, beurzen, bals, schoolfeesten en sinterklaasbezoeken zijn in het collectieve geheugen van de stad gegrift.

Feestelijke opening

De bouw van de Stadsfeestzaal startte aan het einde van de 19de eeuw. Stadsbouwmeester Alexis Van Mechelen creëerde het monumentale pand, dat 8 jaar én 400.000 Belgische frank later feestelijk werd ingehuldigd. Op 8 februari 1908 opende de Stadsfeestzaal haar deuren. In 1983 werd het gebouw officieel erkend als monument.

De ligging in het hartje van de Antwerpse binnenstad – pal in het midden van de Meir – maakte van de stadsfeestzaal een uniek bouwwerk. De rijke bouwkunst van dit grootse etablissement sprak vanaf dag één tot de verbeelding van inwoners en bezoekers van de koekenstad.

De tand des tijds

Doorheen de jaren eiste de tijd haar tol. Het gebouw raakte verouderd door het intensieve gebruik en moeizame onderhoud. In 2000 sloot de stad Antwerpen een overeenkomst met Multi Development om de stadsfeestzaal nieuw leven in te blazen. Dat kaderde in een grote revitalisatie van het Antwerpse winkelcircuit.

Dat verliep echter niet zonder slag of stoot. In december van 2000 vernielde een hevige brand de hele stadsfeestzaal. Enkel de monumentale trappen, de historische gevel en de stalen dakconstructie bleven overeind. Een lang traject van vergunningaanvragen vertraagde de heropleving van het pand.

Een nieuw leven voor een oud monument

In 2004 scheen er plots licht aan het einde van de tunnel. Multi Development verwierf het project voor de herbestemming van de Stadsfeestzaal en ging meteen aan de slag. Wat volgde was een knap staaltje van planning, visie, vakmanschap en intensieve arbeid.

Een nieuw tijdperk

In oktober 2007 was het eindelijk zo ver. De vernieuwde, glorieuze Shopping Stadsfeestzaal opende haar deuren voor het publiek. Het vormde het sluitstuk van een integraal winkelcircuit in de binnenstad. Met kwaliteitsvolle woongelegenheden en een flinke uitbreiding van de parkeergelegenheid erbovenop.

Tot op vandaag is Shopping Stadsfeestzaal een glinsterend baken in het hart van de stad. Een royaal monument waar elke Antwerpenaar terecht trots op is.
